Sometimes I have a very clear idea in mind, and sometimes I don’t.  But either way, I load the brush and start in.

The beginning is my favorite stage because I can be free with texture, medium and paint.  It’s all a green light. I focus on blending colors, while keeping the composition loose.  Sometimes I’ll use water to enhance the effects I’m feeling.  If the direction of a painting still isn't taking shape, I’ll add more paint, maybe rotate the canvas, whatever.

During the process, I might land on a vision very quickly.  Sometimes, it takes longer. But my efforts are never wasted because every stroke of paint builds layers of color and depth.

In the end, the goal is a painting that makes sense, with careful consideration to composition and all its elements.    The finished work is like a puzzle, with every piece in its place.
